Hi,

At first, you may look into the following Microsoft KB and see if it can solve your issue

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2182466/de

Secondly, if it can’t solve your issue, please check the info as bellows:

1.if there is enough space to back up system state.

2.Where is the destination when you backup your system state?

"A system state backup to a shared network folder is not supported"

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc742124%28WS.10%29.aspx

if you through the method as mentioned still can't solve your issue, please gather the following info for further investigation.

1.Input “vssadmin list writers”,” vssadmin list providers” and paste output in the forum for further investigation.

2.input “diskpart” and then input”list vol” and then paste ouput in the forum.

Additionally, you said that you can’t backup system state to C:,there are several errors occurring.

If any of the following are true, you will not be able to back up a system state to that volume.

• Make sure that the target volume has no shadow copy before the backup starts.

• If a system state backup is stored on a source volume, backup settings should be configured for full backups. By default, settings are configured for full backups.

• Periodically check that no other user or program maintains a shadow copy on the target volume.

• Do not keep volume level backups and system state backups in the same location.

• The volume used to store the system state backup needs twice the amount of free space as the size of the system state backup until the backup completes

Hi Jeff,

1. I already applied the KB mentioned below and it didnt solve the problem.

2. There are diskspace (20GB) and it should be enough. Im trying to backup the System State in C on the same server.

3. I checked the vss writers and nothing were wrong. Below is the output.

Hi,

As we know, the system partition should be marked Active so that the Windows Server Backup can read information there.

you can find a solution in this post

Hi,

Ok, now please take the following steps and see whether it can works.

1) Perform cleanboot

2) Uninstall antivirus.

3) Re-install Windows Server Backup role.

4) Create the following Registry Key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\wbengine\SystemStateBackup\

Set the value of this entry as follows:

Name: AllowSSBToAnyVolume

Data type: DWORD

Value data: 1

5) Make sure that the target volume has no shadow copy before the backup starts.

6) Check and uninstall any third party Backup Software.

Hi Jeff,

Just wanted to inform you that after i restart the computer the VM didnt came up. it says that "BOOTMGR is missing"

I had to run recovery mode and repair the BCD after that the machine came up.

Anyway. i follow the instructions and i recieved the same error (The Reg key was already there)

I saw something strange while the backup is running. There was a drive created while the backup was running the is the disk management. and when the backup is finished the drive disappeared.

But now there is an additional drive (system reserved F) that appear in the disk management.

Is that caused by activating the C disk? will losing the booting partition will appear if the server will be restarted again? How to prevent this from happening again? and how can i know that the setting right now for the disk is how it should be?

is it possible to send you the wbadim etl file and analyze it to see what is causing the error?

thanks in advance,

// Laith.

Hi Sumesh,

I checked the server and it didnt have any antivirus in it. I also checked msconfig and nothing was on the services or on the startup.

Any further suggestions?

Perform a clean boot, rerun your scenario and then report back the result.

1. Click "Start", go to "Run", and type "msconfig" in the open box to start the System Configuration Utility.

2. Click the "Services" tab, check the "Hide All Microsoft Services" box and click Disable All (if it is not gray).

3. Click the "Startup" tab, click "Disable All" and click "OK".

4.  Restart your computer. When the "System Configuration Utility" window appears, please check the box and click "OK".

try using hdd sector / clusters bigger dan 4kb !!!! beware!!!! your system becomes nonbootable afterwards, but after this you can perform an backup restore from an extern diskstation with a backup on it.

(this needs to be an single active primary partition or your fucked)

its advicable to format or clean (diskpart) the disk or with a diskpartitionmanager or (linux live-cd partion magic) (wich can handle big drives) to make bigger sectors/clusters than 4kb.
it's much faster this way(can take up to 3 hours to convert with data) and then recover a backup from the extern drive on the bootdisk with the big (>4kb) sectors an clusters.

try with care... maybe it's a mind set to install windows from scratch on a hdd with bigger sectors/clusters than 4kb. the problem relies in bigger sector/clusters than 4kb

good luck!!!
